Every year in Nepal, thousands of Plus 2 graduates face the same dilemma: CA or ACCA? Both are serious professional qualifications. Both demand real commitment. But they serve very different ambitions. This blog uses the latest official data from ACCA Global, ICAN, and Nepal's job market to give you a straight answer.
What Are These Qualifications?
1. ACCA—Association of Chartered Certified Accountants
ACCA was established in 1904 in London, England, and is the world's largest international professional body of accountants. By 2025, ACCA will have more than 257,900 members and 530,100 members in training in over 180 countries, in collaboration with more than 7,600 approved employers around the world. 2. CA (ICAN)—Chartered Accountant, Nepal
The CA qualification is regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN), which has been operating since 1997 under the law, the Nepal Chartered Accountants Act. As of 2022/23, there were almost 9,052 members of ICAN, consisting of a highly credentialed profession with a strong domestic authority. ICAN is a member of IFAC, CAPA, and SAFA, giving Nepal's CAs access to international professional networks, even if individual mobility remains limited.

The Honest Verdict: Which Should You Choose?
The decision between ACCA and CA isn't just about which qualification is more impressive to your family or friends, but also about where you plan to pursue your career. ACCA is a good option if you want to pursue an international career or maintain global career prospects. It takes 3–4 years to qualify, and you can sit for the exam four times a year. You will be ready for jobs other than audit roles, such as fintech, consulting, and strategy. Moreover, ACCA offers structured assistance in learning hubs such as FinT, and multinational companies, INGOs, and the Big Four accounting firms highly value it. https://finthub.com/
On the other hand, if you are certain you want to establish your long-term career in Nepal, CA (ICAN) may be the better option. It can enable you to start your own CA practice, give you the right to sign statutory audits, and is necessary for higher positions with the government or regulatory authorities. But it demands a more committed and longer investment of time, and is the most nationally recognized profession in Nepal. Finally, the option you select should match a career objective, desired locations, and desired career opportunities.
